The UN High Commission for Refugees has reported the number of refugees worldwide has reached a 26-year low of 8.4 million. More than 6 million refugees have returned home since 2002. However, the number of internally-displaced people (who live within their own country but are displaced from their homes) has grown. The number of displaced people rose from 19.5 million in 2004 to 21 million in 2005. The highest numbers of internally-displaced people include: Colombia (2 million), Iraq (1.6 million), Pakistan (1.1 million), Sudan (1 million) and Afghanistan (0.9 million). Afghanistan also has the highest number of its population living abroad as refugees, with 1.9 million in 72 foreign countries; however, this number is falling as more than 4.6 million returned home since 2002. Refugee numbers in Europe fell by 15%; Europe is presently home to 25% of all refugees (UNHCR).
