Vulnerable Mission conference, USA, January 2009

the USA in January 2009. ‘Vulnerable Christian Mission’ is that practiced by western missionaries reaching non-westerners using the resources and language of the
non-westerners in ministry. By working within the parameters of those being
reached, vulnerable missionaries avoid creation of dependency, the
prosperity Gospel and the unintended spread of ’secularism’ in the name of
Christ. The prerogative for adjustment falls on the missionary, and not the
nationals being reached. This represents a ‘normalisation’ of global mission
away from post-colonial models. (See also Mark 6:8-9.) Instead of
threatening indigenous Christianity with subsidised foreign models,
vulnerable mission sanctions and empowers the indigenous church.
