Our mission: Helping believers passionately, quickly, and effectively reach the least-reached 27% of our world.
Our goals
We want to build six things in our readers:
Drive: a passion to head quickly down the path to the least-reached peoples of the world;
Energy: a capacity to bring the Gospel across barriers of culture, language or location;
Effort: actions that lead to evangelism, church planting, and societal transformation;
Inspiration: an ability to recruit the unmotivated and unmobilized into the movement;
Power: increased effectiveness through self-discipline, accountability and unwavering focus;
Strength: to resist outside forces that would sway us from the task of frontier mission.

About us
For many years now, mission agencies around the world have been focused on the “unreached” or “unevangelized”. Everyone has a phrase (World A, the 10/40 Window, the Resistant Belt, etc). Many have built up specific ministries that make an impact globally (the JESUS Film, Operation World, satellite broadcasting, etc). As a result, an incredible amount of energy to reach the unreached has been built.
Unfortunately, after the AD 2000 & Beyond Movement closed its doors in 2000, some of this energy began to fade away. A lot was being done, but not much was being said. And the problem is: we have a lot of energy, but not enough. We got close but have not yet finished the race.
Worse, as the visibility of unreached peoples fades, an ominous new trend has begun. In recent conferences, however, we’ve begun to hear comments like “Haven’t we heard enough about unreached peoples?” or “Unreached peoples! That ship has sailed.” It seems shameful to have built up this enormous energy, to have moved so close—for real progress has been made—and then let it go. The church is growing faster in Africa and Asia than any other region. Mission should be building on this energy.
Since the “volume” of talk about unreached peoples is going down, it seems necessary to launch something fresh that will be a current voice—something that will keep this focus in front of the church. This “voice” must:
Advocate. It must keep the face of unreached peoples in front of the church. It must say: “Remember! By 2025, unless things change, over 2 billion people will be unreached.”
Encourage. We must encourage the church by telling the many good things that are being done. There are places where the beginnings of church planting movements can be seen. Today we are debating what kind of church a Muslim-background believer needs. Just a few decades ago that debate would have been unthinkable.
Connect. We must continually make it easier for people to make an impact on the least-reached. How can the regular John Doe in Des Moines, Dublin, Dakar or Delhi get involved? We have to simplify this process and give people an easier understanding of the steps involved.
Monitor. We must also observe what is happening and identify trouble spots. It’s important to find these and bring together as many bright, spiritually mature people as possible in order to seek solutions.
We considered a number of different routes for raising the “volume” about unreached peoples. A global consultation was already being planned for 2006, with the potential for regional conferences after that. A sustained voice would fill a niche. After talking to many people about what it should be like (email? blog? magazine?) we settled on a magazine that would be delivered electronically to the widest number of people possible.
The leaders we asked agreed with us. We received nearly 600 responses to an Internet-based survey from leaders, field workers, academics and laypeople all over the world, including more than 150 specific comments and suggestions. All used traditional prayer resources like Operation World and Global Prayer Digest, journals like EMQ and IBMR, magazines like Mission Frontiers, and e-zines like Brigada. Yet over 95% emphatically said a publication focused exclusively on unreached peoples would be something they would use.
Thus Momentum was born: to capture and boost energy to reach the least-reached with the Good News of Jesus Christ. We’ve designed it in part based on the suggestions many people have made. It will be published bi-monthly and archived on the Web.
Each issue will have several features written by workers in the field, including a mix of highly detailed articles and shorter summaries. We will also have regular columns and pieces that summarize current events, note upcoming events, examine trends and analyze issues in-depth. Much of this will be drawn from sources all over the world.
We are not planning to charge a subscription fee for Momentum at this time. Although there are expenses, we hope that these will be covered by donations from those who find Momentum to be of use. We would prefer a wider circulation to a smaller, richer one.
We are also planning to work on translating Momentum into multiple languages. If you are interested in helping with this—or if you have any comments at all on the magazine—we would certainly like to hear from you.
