[edit] History
The Ghana Evangelical Missions Association, GEMA for short, was founded in 1989 at the Ghana Evangelism Committee’s (GEC’s) maiden consultation on Evangelizing Ghana. The consultation brought together all the mainline Churches, Pentecostal and Charismatic; as well as the Indigenous African Churches. Each of the broad spectra of the Ghanaian Church was represented.
Facts and figures derived from the painstaking research by the trustworthy GEC sparked a lot of discussions and resolutions. In February 1990, the late Prof. Emeritus Kwesi Dickson of the Methodist Church (then the august President of the Methodist Conference) officially inaugurated GEMA. GEMA became the Ghanaian Church’s brainchild who was tasked with the following aims and objectives:
- To unite Christian missions related organizations in the country so as to carry out the Great Commission in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- To cultivate the productive partnership between the local Churches and missions work.
- To promote co-operation among Christian missions and mission related bodies in Ghana
- To eliminate wasteful duplication and to pool resources.
- To create a forum for the sharing of strategies and techniques.
- To represent Ghanaian missions at home and abroad.
- To set and maintain improved standards of accountability and integrity.
- To provide the machinery and means for compilation, collation and dissemination of information on Ghanaian missionary activity.
- To associate and affiliate with appropriate regional and global bodies.
