The Republic of Gambia lies almost entirely within Senegal, surrounded on the north, east and south. from its western coast, Gambia's territory follows the Gambia River more than 186 miles inland. [edit] Religion

  • Senegal is comprised ofIslam 92.1%, Christianity 4.8%, Traditional 3%, Other 0.1%. In Senegal, 80% of the population belong to three powerful Muslim groups. The Mourinde Muslims operate like a separate country and have strong trade links around the world. Muslim leaders have a significant influence over all aspects of Senegal life – and few people would make decisions without consulting their towns marabouts (holy men).
  • Religious freedom: There is a lot of freedom and tolerance different religions in Senegal ― which is amazing in such an Islamic land, but only a few Muslims have ever become Christians.

[edit] Magic

  • Right now (February 2008) over 2 million people are milling around in Touba, a city in Senegal, where they gather for the yearly MAGAL, a prayer feast in memory of a dead marabout called Serign Touba. His lineage continue the Marabout dynasty. The President of Senegal, many government officials and recently westerners are visiting the city.

[edit] Christianity

[edit] History

[edit] Churches

  • Evangelical believers are few, the rate of growth slow. Evangelical: 0.1% - about 7,000
  • The country is desperately in need of more Christian workers ― there are no more than 100 full-time Christian workers across the whole country. Pray that more leaders with a heart for discipleship and evangelism can be trained and released.
  • The Christian workers long to see Christ-centred, vibrant, multiplying communities of Christians and churches throughout the country and especially in the areas and among people groups where God has led us to work. In the larger cities, some of the towns and in the south there are churches but in the north of the country there are only vry few churches.

[edit] Church and State Relations

[edit] Mission

  • West Africa is still to be reached! In Senegal the church is small but gaining a sense of identity. The north and east, particularly are still needing pioneer evangelists willing to work the hard rocky soil, while elsewhere the growing church needs help to grasp hold of God's vision for them in reaching the peoples without Gospel.
  • "Senegal won for Jesus by the Senegalese!" These words were recently spoken by Senegalese pastors. With only 14,000 Christians in a largely Muslim population of 12,5 million that is a far-reaching vision! A new generation is rising! Pioneer expatriate missionaries are still needed, pray also that the local Christians will be envisioned, trained and sent out. Opportunities abound. The country is still open.
  • A quarter of the population live in the capital Dakar. Christian groups are slowly growing. May for God opens doors to reach all of the different ethnic groups of Senegal so that the Gospel of Jesus Christ would be spread across the country.

[edit] Bible Translation

  • February 2008: The first complete translation of the Bible into a language of Serere-Sine (people cluster Atlantic) was not only the first in this language, but also the first translation of the entire Bible in the country. With a thanksgiving service in Fatick it was introduced. In Senegal there are a total of 35 languages. In some of them were already the entire New Testament or parts of the Bible translated. A complete Bible, but was previously only available in the official language French and West African Creole. Nearly one-tenth of the 12,5 million people speak Serere-Sine. This is the most widespread language in the country.

[edit] Broadcasting

  • There are four Christian radio stations with a good number of listeners.
