The state controls all religions including Buddhism but Buddhism is maintaining its place in the population and Christianity is severely persecuted by the government. [edit] Persecution

  • Vietnam remains one of the worst persecutors of Christians. The more the church grows the more the authorities try to stamp it out. Unregistered church meetings are broken up and their leaders thrown in jail. Local officials have repressed believers in some parts of the Central and Northwest Highlands and other areas by forcing church gatherings to cease, closing house churches, and pressuring individuals to renounce their religious beliefs, often unsuccessfully.
  • The government is keen to paint a positive picture of human rights and religious freedom. In practice a system of registration is used to keep religious groups under strict control. In the Central Highlands evangelical Christianity has been seen as linked to independence movements: a government document indicates their aim is to manage, limit and reverse the growth of the Church in this region. In remote regions persecution is intense. Reports are that arbitrary arrests, harassment and fines continue.
  • The family and friends of a Christian man who was tortured to death at the end of June 2007, need encouragement and faith. The other believers need help, that they get not to be discouraged and that they lift their eyes to God for guidance and inspiration.
  • Despite persecution the Church is growing in Vietnam ― especially among the mountain tribal people. Thank God that his Spirit is stronger than any laws or government.
